The sultry voice of Sean C. Johnson has returned with his first commercial material since 2015 album “Circa 1998” with single Save Me. Not a huge follower of gospel or contemporary R’n’B music, Sean C. Johnson magically sucks me in with his easy-to-follow rap style and luscious vocal lines. Mountains off “Circa 1998” wowed me with his soothing grooves and incredible tenor tone, and I have been eagerly waiting his next album ever since!
Johnson has returned with single Save Me, describing his difficult battle to find love, united with his faith in God. The song is heartfelt, desperate and perfectly sensual without bastardising the religious tone of the music. Johnson’s vocals are impeccable as always, and he manages to sit above the backdrop of doodling electric guitar, backing vocals and subtle drum kit comfortably. If anything, Save Me is perhaps too busy in the chorus as the layers of sensitive and delicate lines construct an unnecessarily overloaded setting. However, the emotion and conviction of the performance remains the same beautiful story.
The track has passion and direction, and it is the direction that first impressed me with Johnson’s music, and it is the direction I would like to see him continue pursuing. Sean C. Johnson manages to fill that niche area of contemporary gospel that feels relevant to the youth of today, whilst remaining loyal to his faith in God. I may not be Christian, but this music is powerful, vehement and engaging; something that cannot be said about most pop music these days. I look forward to seeing what more music Johnson will bringing us in the future! You might also like...
