Milky Chance have emerged from their shell with 'Cocoon'

After more than three years since their successful debut album Sadnecessary, including hit song ‘Stolen Dance’, German folk duo Milky Chance have returned with a rocking new single that’s got me excited for the summer. And for most of us, hoping to unravel from the turmoils of 2016, ‘Cocoon’ is the track to get us into summer partying spirit!
The track is simple, employing a repeated acoustic guitar foundation, and a basic percussion groove with four on the floor bass drum and simple hand percussion. The track is distinctively Milky Chance, with lead singer Clemens Rehbein’s distinctive nasally German accent and chillaxed guitar riffs. It would be easy to mistake the track as a reprise of their Sadnecessary songs, such as ‘Stunner’ or hit ‘Stolen Dance’. But don’t me mistaken; Milky Chance have their eyes set on the future with some new material!

Clemens lyrics, however, are hauntingly relatable to the global drama of recent days, as he sings “let’s go back to our cocoon”. Despite the seemingly feel good nature of the song, this isn’t quite a summer celebration; rather, a tale of torment.  And with a new album in the works, perhaps this is a hint of things to come…

Perhaps the thing I love most about Milky Chance's style is the way they can create fantastic pop songs using merely simple folk song features, like acoustic guitars, catchy melodic lines and simple percussive beats. There’s nothing complicated or distinctively “wow-factor” about their tracks, lacking the classic bass drops or soaring vocal lines of typical top-20 hits, and it amounts to humble and relatable music. It sounds like a couple of guys making music for the joy of music, and I love it for what it is.

The track is a killer, and has me excited for what Milky Chance will be releasing in the future. Yes, the track does sound similar to their previous material, but if it means new music is on its way, I’m certainly excited!
