Another year has come and gone. I must thank each and every one of you for your ongoing support over the last 12 months and beyond. In 2017, I wrote more music than I have ever before, I had plenty of premieres and new projects come through, and that wouldn't be without your encouragement.
2017 has catapulted me into an incredibly exciting 2018! I am going on exchange to University of Salford, near Manchester, from late January to June, where I will be able to study composition under some of the best brass band composers in the business. I'll also be heading to a number of exciting events while I am there, including the European Brass Band Championships, the UK Regionals and the RNCM Brass Band Festival. The trip certainly isn't cheap, but I'm sure I'll be enjoying every penny's worth with fantastic experiences that Australians can only dream of. But before we truly get into 2018, I thought I'd reflect on my top 10 Compositional and Musical Highlights of 2017 below. 10) New Band "What the Funk"
Late last year, I've pieced together a band of mates to start a new brass cover band "What the Funk" and have had an absolute blast playing together. Check out a cover we did last year at Barkly Square below.
9) Brass Band Biffo Game Show
Late 2017 also saw a brand new brass band game show, the Brass Band Biffo, where bands went head to head to find out who knew brass banding best. Check out Ararat and Northern Brass compete below.
8) Buckley for Concert Band
My first major work for Concert Band, Hobart Wind Symphony, under the direction of Simon Reade, selected and workshopped "Buckley" as part of their annual Composition Workshop. Check out some samples of their performance below.
7) Transcription of "Tears for Pachelbel"
A big surprise when I uploaded a transcription of Christoph Moschberger and Albert Wieder's duet onto Youtube, my transcription has attracted nearly 8,000 views at the time of writing. Check it out below.
6) Interview with Iwan Fox of 4BarsRest
It was a great pleasure to speak with arguably the largest reaching media outlet in brass banding, when I was interviewed by Iwan Fox from 4BarsRest. Check it out below.
5) Residency with scapegoat
My Monash composition course offers a fantastic residency each year, and this year's residency with duo scapegoat was no different. We workshopped my work "Wrath" for Soprano Saxophone and Percussion, which you can watch below.
4) MSO Pizzicatto Effect Composition Prize
It was a great honour to receive the 2017 MSO Pizzicato Effect Prize for Composition for "Backyard Battle". Expanding my compositional horizons, the award has encouraged me into further pursuing string writing.
3) Robyn Young Under 21 Award for PZAZZ
After working on "PZAZZ" for a number of months, it was a great pleasure to watch South Brisbane Federal Brass Band premiere my work at their Composition Competition. The piece went one better by winning the Robyn Young Under 21 Prize, as adjudicated by NBCA President Bill Broughton.
2) Bittersweet wins 2017 Nock Deighton Challenge at the Ironbridge Gorge Brass Band Festival
Within days of returning from the Feds Composition Competition Concert, I was notified of my first international composition competition success, with Bittersweet winning the Nock Deighton Challenge at the Ironbridge Gorge Brass Band Festival. 1) Buckley for Brass Band premiered at Australian National Championships
Arguably my largest project to date, Buckley for Brass Band, commissioned by Richard Harvey for Jeff Steele and Geelong West Brass Band was a resounding success, placing the band 3rd in the Own Choice Section of the B Grade Australian National Band Championships. For more background, read here.
