It is December, and the Christmas cheer is rife. There's the smell of pine, the jingling of bells and plump elderly men become the centre of attraction. However, for the older kids amongst us, December means a time to vote, for democracy and hopefully the success of an underdog. It's time to vote for triple j's Hottest 100 Countdown. So, for those of you who may have any curiosity as to who I've voted for, I have listed (and justified) my top 10 songs from 2016. Please note that I have only voted for songs I believe have a chance for placement on the list (ie. no indie Swedish bluegrass bands!). That being said, in no particular order, the following are my top 10 tracks from 2016! 1) Tash Sultana - NotionThe winner of the 2016 Unearthed J Award, Tash's EP 'Notion' took the Australian music scene by storm. The above track, alongside Jungle, should be fierce competitors in January's countdown. 2) SAFIA - ZionFrom the electronica superstars comes Zion, a track that I fell in love with when I first heard Safia's album 'Internal'. The song magically encapsulates the sounds of Melbourne's busking scene, from the grooving tribal beat, the pipe flutes and rhythmic didgeridoo. 3) Golden Vessel - Do You Think About Me? (ft. MTNS)From an electronic artist I discovered earlier this year, Do You Think About Me? is a fantastic track that I wish was so much bigger than it actually is. Definitely looking forward to where Golden Vessel is going! 4) M83 - Do It, Try ItMaking retro synths and funky keyboards cool again, M83's Do It, Try It was my hit song from their latest album 'Junk'. Would love to see some more French pop on Australia's countdown! 5) Matt Corby - Knife EdgeA rare success from Australian Idol, Matt Corby finally released his debut album this year, and track Knife Edge allows Corby to pour all his soul into a funky upbeat number. Even more impressive is the modulation down a tone, a bold but successful transformation to the song. Looking forward to seeing more of what Corby has to offer. 6) A.B. Original - Dumb Things (ft. Paul Kelly/Dan Sultan)I always love to support the triple J Like a Version program, and love to pop one of the best covers from the year into my top 10. This year, I could not look past the Paul Kelly classic Dumb Things, reworked by A.B. Original and Dan Sultan. Great to see Kelly still has all of his incredible talent! 7) The Temper Trap - Thick as ThievesAnother classic Aussie group, The Temper Trap, were back in 2016 with album 'Thick as Thieves'. Slightly more rocky than hits Sweet Disposition and Fader, the music is mystical, yet distinctly Temper Trap. Great to see them live earlier this year at the Palais Theatre! 8) James Vincent McMorrow - SurrealI've always loved James Vincent McMorrow's soaring falsettos and incredible lyricism. His 2016 album 'We Move' is breathtaking and his harmonies, especially in track Surreal are beyond incredible. Hoping to see him live next year! 9) Palace - Break the SilenceLooking for an alternative to the Kings of Leon? I came across Palace earlier this year with their album 'So Long Forever'. Break the Silence captures the haunting, yet driving style of the London based band. Make sure to check out the rest of their music too! 10) Flume - Never Be Like You (ft. Kai)And finally, my call for what will be the No. 1 on the triple J Hottest 100 2016, I cannot look past Flume. Yes, he's been arrogant about it, and his Like a Version cover was mediocre at best. However, his singles from 'Skin' have been incredible, and with a handful of Arias under his belt, I can't see him losing the countdown. So that's who I've voted for in this year's Hottest 100. Do you agree? Let me know what you think in the comments below!
Make sure to cast your vote! I strongly urge you not to just copy someone else's! Be democratic and put the songs from 2016 that you've loved onto the people's music countdown of the year!
