DetailsThis setting of 'Lord of All Being, Throned Afar' was commissioned by Wayne Bowden OAM for premiere at the 2023 Victorian State Band Championships. It is based on the hymn 'Arizona' composed by Lancastrian composer Robert Henry Earnshaw (1856-1929). Earnshaw set his tune to the 1848 text 'Lord of All Being, Throned Afar' by American author Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894).
The setting features three verses. The first is arranged in a traditional four-part harmony, featuring a stoic euphonium countermelody. In the second verse, the tune is shared across smaller ensembles and soloists. A transitory passage featuring principal cornet and trombone lead the setting to the final glorious chorus. The third verse is reharmonised, featuring an ambulating bass line, fanfaric cornets and splendorous percussion. The setting concludes by returning to the introduction material, with the Arizona tune sung a final time by the trombone section. Suitable for 3rd Section (C Grade) and above. |
