'Making Für Fly' is a thrilling marimba solo with a latin-spin, based on Ludwig van Beethoven's popular piano work Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor, more commonly known as 'Für Elise'. Originally written in triple metre and played at a leisurely tempo, 'Für Elise' has long captivated audiences as a meandering melancholic composition with its distinctive chromatic opening melody and ascending arpeggio lines.
Jared McCunnie's arrangement for marimba soloist and brass band turns the well known composition and flips it on its head. Uncontroversial in its opening, the arrangement quickly explodes into an upbeat latin-style dance, with the soloist dazzling with rapid arpeggios and embellishments above sonorous horn countermelodies. Deliberately leaning away from the delicacy of Beethoven's original, the arranger certainly 'makes the fur fly' with this contemporary and toe-tapping take on one of the most recognisable compositions of European classical music.
