They say Rome wasn't built in a day: rather it was built off the rivalry of two demi-god twins Romulus & Remus. Jared McCunnie's composition for brass band draws inspiration from the brothers' tale of turmoil and triumph.
Romulus & Remus opens with a fanfare rearing with tension and conflict for the sons of Mars, the god of War. The fanfare builds to a cacophonic climax before fading to the calls of Lupa, a she-wolf who finds the baby twins abandoned in a basket floating down the River Tiber. Lupa cares for the boys, teaching them her cunning. As the twins grow older, it becomes apparent that Romulus is a character full of strength and ambition, while Remus is caring and compassionate. When Remus is captured by King Amulius, Romulus courageously rescues his brother, killing the king in the process. Attracting a loyal horde of supporters, the brothers acknowledge their destiny is to found a new empire to replace that controlled by King Amulius. However, the brothers could not agree on the location of the city, and ultimately Romulus kills his brother. Albeit bittersweet, Romulus is named ruler of Rome, the inception of one of history's greatest empires. Duration - c. 12 min Difficulty - 3rd Section / C Grade |
