Details'Two to Ten', composed by Jared McCunnie, was commissioned by Darwin City Brass Band in 2022 to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the first Bombing of Darwin and subsequent raids on Darwin and Northern Australia 1942-44.
At 9:58 on the morning of February 19th 1942, the typically peaceful Darwin Harbour was unexpectedly attacked by 188 Japanese aircraft. The attack came from multiple directions, most surprisingly from the south. 237 people were killed, and crucial facilities were extensively damaged including the wharf and post office. Darwin and other areas of Northern Australia were raided by air throughougt 1942 to 1944, the only direct attacks on Australian soil during the Second World War. After capturing the unpredictable raids, 'Two to Ten' solemnly mourns the deceased and damaged cities through an elegiac requiem. Initially sorrowful, the composition gradually builds to capture the fighting spirit of the Darwinites, leading to a triumphant chorus. Difficulty - 3rd Section+ (C/D Grade) |
