'Whispers of War' was specially written by Jared McCunnie for Western Brass, a Melburnian band he conducts, as the concert opener for their REBELLION themed set at the 2022 Grampians Brass Festival. Whispers of War derives its inspiration from Holst's 'The Planets' suite, most specifically the rhythmic ostinato used in the first movement 'Mars, the Bringer of War'.

​The tension of unspoken angst propels the work forwards, building from ominous basses and tenor voices up to an angular layering of muted cornets. The piece gradually builds to a grand finale, making the perfect opening to a band's program!​
